An investigation initiated after the robbery of a safe in Elche has led the National Police to arrest the four members of an itinerant criminal group of Bosnian origin who, aboard a motorhome, moved through different parts of Spain to commit robberies and thefts in areas of high purchasing power and tourism. The National Police accuses the detainees of 25 robberies in municipalities of Alicante, Malaga, the Balearic Islands and Madrid, where they managed  to loot about 200,000 euros.

The four arrested, three of them defended by the lawyer Francisco Miguel Galiana Botella, have been placed in preventive detention after being arrested in Benalmádena after detecting the movement of the gang from France to the Costa del Sol aboard a motorhome.

The Police seized 24,000 euros in cash from the arrestees  as well as electronic devices and jewelry, all hidden in different “coves” inside the motorhome.

Touring band

The investigation began last September after the robbery of a safe in a shopping center in Elche, where they stole about 8,800 euros in cash. After various efforts, the agents identified the alleged perpetrators and found that it was a criminal group dedicated to the commission of crimes against property on an itinerant basis. Thanks to this, it was possible to prove his involvement in ten other crimes, including the theft of an armored van in Ibiza, in which 60,000 euros in cash were stolen.

With the investigations carried out, the investigators detected that they always traveled by motorhome throughout the national territory, having no known address in Spain, and that they were specialized in two crimes in particular, robbery with force and theft of safes, as well as robberies with force inside vehicles.

Tourist areas

To commit the acts, always in areas of high purchasing power and tourism, they acted in a coordinated manner and carried out prior surveillance and follow-up work, their objective being the theft of money, jewellery or electronic devices for subsequent receipt on the black market. All of them had a multitude of identities and false documentation, one of them having up to 24 different identities.

Finally, the agents detected the group’s motorhome travel from Nice – their place of residence – to the Costa del Sol for the probable commission of more criminal acts. The four suspects were located and arrested in the town of Benalmádena, where the vehicle was entered and searched and inside they located different “caletas” – hiding places – where they hid effects from the illicit activities. In total, 24,000 euros in cash, 1,000 in various foreign currency, a 100-franc gold coin, numerous high-value electronic devices and various jewellery were seized.

The Police have so far been able to clarify 25 criminal acts against property committed in towns in Alicante, Malaga, the Balearic Islands and the Community of Madrid, where it has caused economic damage valued at about 200,000 euros.
